TPACK Lesson Plan

Mr. Galla's 7th Grade Class

2 Day Lesson Plan: Make Your Own Moby

Overview: In this lesson, students will use BrainPOP resources to explore 3D printing. Students will learn what 3D printers can and cannot do and sketch a useful object that they'd like to to make with a 3D printer. Students with 3D printer access will also be able to print their own 3D Moby.

Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to know how to use 3D printing and sketch an object they'd like to print. If they have access to a 3D printer, they will also be able to print their own 3D Moby.

Materials:

Instruction-

Introduction: To begin the lesson, I will start off by showing them the final project I did on my own before class. I will give a brief description of everything we are going to go over. I will pull up BrainPOP to make sure all the students understand how the website works. I will go over some of the terminology regarding BrainPOP with the students. I tell the students how I plan on grading them on this activity and what all I expect from them.

Lesson Procedure:

  1. The day before we start this lesson, the students will need to find an article online about 3D printing and generate a list of questions they have about the topic. They also need to make a list of some objects they would like to create using the 3D printer. (if access to one)

  2. I will display the Graphic Organizer on my interactive whiteboard. I will then encourage students to volunteer and share what they already know about 3D printing based on their independent research. I will then have them share what they'd like to know about 3D printing that they did not find. I will then type their responses into the organizer.

  3. I will pull up the  3D Printing Movie for the class on BrainPOP

  4. Return to the graphic organizer. Then I will ask the following questions: Is there any information they thought they knew that was incorrect? What new information do they have now? Which questions were answered and which remain unanswered? Are there any new questions that the students have?

  5. If access to a 3D printer in classroom, I will tell the students they will have the opportunity to print their own 3D Moby, just like in the movie. I will then show the students the  3D Moby .stl file and demonstrate how to print.

  6. I will pass out copies of the Activity or graph paper, and encourage students to sketch something that is both useful and simple enough to print on a 3D printer.

  7. I will allow students to share their ideas and creations with the class.

  8. I will then assign the Quiz

Closure: I will ask the students to bring me their Moby finished product. I will look over the finished project and give them a grade for it. After I check out their product, I will ask them if they have anymore questions regarding 3D printing. I will also ask for their feedback on what they thought of this project. I feel like this is important because the more the students enjoy doing a project, the more they will want to learn and the more they will get out of it.

Assessment: Students will be assessed on how well they do on the final quiz at the end of the lesson. This quiz will be done online on BrainPOP and will automatically be graded. I will allow two attempts at this quiz. That way the students can learn from their mistakes and correct them on their own. I have found that to be the best way learning the material.

Comments

  1. Your lesson plan was really good. I thought it was really good because you had the students learn some things on their own. You did a little bit of a flipped classroom. I think that this is really good with older grade levels. I also liked all your different apps that you used.

  5. Great job on your lesson! This will be a fun activity for students to learn about 3D printing. I liked that throughout the lesson you kept asking the students questions and making sure that they understood the lesson. You also let them give you feedback on the lesson which will then let you know if you need to make any changes.
